A little about me

Thespanishartist had become my pen name back when I got my first computer in 1995. I chose the name because of my Spanish heritage on my fathers side of the family, originating from Spain, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.   Not to ignore the fact that on my mothers side was from Amsterdam, and Israel.  It was too complicated to mix them, so I picked the one that best describes my work. The Spanish culture is rich with color in their foods, costume and within their communities with bright colored homes and decor. Being born here in the United States I have innately adapted to these Hispanic traits which primarily shows in my art.

There are other qualities however that comes from strong influences while growing up and throughout my life thus far.

My first introduction that I can remember was  Andrew Wyeth. His ability to capture a moment in time, emanating solitude, beautiful loose strokes of the gestured line combined with great detail captured me in his work, especially "Cristina's World.

Other artists that I discovered on my own caught my attention because of their diligence to experimentation.

Picasso, Monet, Gauguin, Kandinsky and Paul Klee were some of the artists that painted with emotion and energy.  They intensified the use of color, drawing distorted , exaggerated shapes and were usually created from contemporary experiences.

Now some of the female artists in history impacted me by way of similar experiences of being a woman, The discoveries I made within my self often paralleled with some of their history and in turn shows in my early images. Georgia Okeeffe. Frida Kahlo, Judy Chicago are some of the women that explored issues of femininity, nature and family as well as powerful description of life as it was happening.

But the most influential artists that have inspired me are the ones that I had personally met and were taught by. Luca Buvoli  , Peter Hrstoff, Elena Sisto and Bill Komoski are a few Artists that not only teach at the School of Visual Arts but have and are making a big impact on art today.

Please take some time looking and reading about these great artists and possibly you could see their influences in my work.  Although I have been exploring my own path in art, there is at least one thing that each of these artists have taught me that I still use in my artistic process.
